For highlighting blank cells in excel, we are using conditional formatting. Steps are :

Sample

Step 1 (Open more rules of conditional formatting)

Select data range > Conditional Formatting > Highlight Cell Rules > More Rules

Step 2 (Selecting Blanks from dropdown)

Select : Format only cells that contain > Select Blanks as shown below :

Step 3 (Selecting Style)

Click format > Select Fill Tab > choose color > press ok > press ok in main window
